Lumbar Laminectomy – Low Back Decompression
A lumbar laminectomy, also known as decompression, is a procedure used to reduce or alleviate pain being caused by degenerative conditions of the lower back. This may include bone spurs, disc herniation or degeneration, and a variety of other conditions that may cause narrowing of the spine or pressure on the nerves of the spine. In a lumbar laminectomy a surgeon will remove part of the lamina in order to reduce pressure on the nerves.
Lumbar Laminectomy Procedure Specifics
This is a posterior procedure, so the incision is made in the center of the lower back. Lamina and spinous processes are removed using surgical instruments. Other causes of spinal nerve compression, including bone spurs, are also removed. This extra space is effective for alleviating pain-causing pressure.
Following a lumbar laminectomy patients will typically be kept in the hospital for one or two days. Pain from the procedure will generally subside within one or two weeks.
